Interview?
- So hello
- Hello
- What do you think you’re doing?
- What do I think I am doing?
- Yes, why in all that is good and proper are you mucking about with form and silliness when you should be uploading OTHER ARTISTS to Muddy Leaks.
- I am an artist too!
- Yes but not ANOTHER ARTIST
- I am an artist three!
- You should be blogging about the festival
- This is about the festival!
- And how awesome Mudfest is and how hard everyone is working
- How hard I am working?
- You?
- You?
- You are playing games with interviewing me, myself and I. Clearly you have too much time on your hands.
- […]
- What?
- […]
- Where have you gone?
- […]
- Where have you been?
- Oh sorry I had to go and re-upload everything from muddyleaks onto the mufest site blog. As well as email photos to someone that I have been promising for ages for concept art that I drew for one of my shows as well as writing and editing other artist interviews and thinking and planning on sorting out comps for people that need to be sorted. Oh and also I am filling out forms for leaving the country and starting Uni overseas in just over two weeks whilst constantly thinking about packing up this house and if everything will end up working out and being ok in the end – which it probably will – but still time, time, time, TIME! And instead what I really should have been doing is sitting here typing bugger all into this document and asking where I have been and gone.
- I said you should be doing something else.

Tastings Artist Interview #1

Artist name: Domini Marshall
Show/artwork: Right Beside You, part of the Tastings showcase
Dates: 25th and 26th August
What was your initial motivation for joining the Mudfest Kaliedoscope in 2011? The Tastings program sounded like an amazing opportunity to work with an established playwright in developing a script. It's the first play I've written and the process has been fun and a great learning experience.
Is this your first mudfest show? Yes!
Are their future plans for this show? Not at the moment...but maybe..
[Lilly's note - there TOTALLY SHOULD BE!]
Who is involved? Nadia Fragnito is the amazing director on board. Declan Greene is the fabulous playwright mentoring me. Sarah Hall and Sean O'Donoghue are the lovely actors.
What is the most scary thing about the show? The scariest element is also the most exciting and is yet to come - the audience's reaction! I hope they'll laugh at the irony but recognise the tragedy. Mudfest has been a really fantastic and supportive space to develop and produce creative ideas. I've had next to none experience in playwrighting but Mudfest was the perfect platform to begin.

From the Archives!
Muddy leaks blogging
The thing with blogging is you need the time to blog. At the moment with Mudfest stuff involving every non-working (and for me non-packing) minute time is hard to come by. But in some ways this is of course really, really good as this festival is going to be INCREDIBLE. Caps Lock Totally Warrented.
So as it happens I am on the train coming into rehearsals and seizing this opportunity to tap a few updates.
Firstly, have you seen how incredible the tramstops are looking? Especially the one at Melbourne University . Such colour! Such a kaleidoscope. Very, very, very pretty. Congratulations to everyone involved in the set up and especially to Erin who has co-ordinated the plan as well as sewing endless patchwork-y marvels to bring some life to the Melbourne University tramstop.
The Tastings Masterclass happened and apparently went well. With the mentors providing good feedback for the performers it was great to see how much the work is developing. Even a short rehearsal period produces truly marvellous stuff in the theatre
The first Creative Writing Workshop has been moved due to outside factors so the lovely and talented Lally Katz will be leading the event from 1.30pm in the Guild Theatre (I think?) this Thursday 18th August. Think of it as an aperitif to the opening night. Bring your pens and your paper and a will to write. For only $5 you will be kicking yourself at missing the opportunity!
Tickets are selling bit by bit. Remember it is always a good idea to book ahead for events that you are wanting to see. We here at Muddy Leaks have learnt the hard way with that. It looks as if Wait has completely sold out without a reviewer booked in – we need to sort this asap but the message is – do not let this be you! Book now ____.
Remember also that because of the way Mudfest is structured some evenings you can catch two or three shows in a row in the same venue – or switch it around a bit too. There is no end to all the combinations that you can create as part of your Mudfest experience! Why not come to Is This Too Framed? A Directed Reading and then stick around (with a quick drink in between) for the grand opening of Zoo Story. Or perhaps it is worth noting that if you arrive half an hour before the show in the Open Stage you can catch Absence before hand in the foyer.
There is always something exciting and happening in the Mudclub and also there are many things occurring during the day. It’s lunch time and suddenly the recycling bin you are popping your paper waste into starts growling – what is going on? EVERYTHING SPEAKS! Or when waiting do be sure to discover all the installations and visual art that is part of the festival
So busy this didn't even get posted until AFTER festival has opened. Lovely opening night everyone. Totally exicted about this thing! x Lilly

What is the "Melbourne Experience" worth?
On a more serious note, it is indicative of the state of the tertiary education sector that a student operated and run arts festival (MUDfest) goes from a budget of approx. $73, 000 to absolutely nil. ie: 0.
It would do the University of Melbourne good to realise that the perfect University is not one without students for it is the students and staff that make up a University. A lot of time is invested in promoting campus as a vibrant and exciting place to be but what makes it that? It is not the presence of shops etc. It is the people and the culture that forms around these people that is important. Specifically in this case of MUDfest, we are taking creative people.
Numbers. Student numbers. We all get one, and yet we are surprisingly much, much more than that. Students who come to Melbourne University expecting the "Melbourne Experience" do not necessarily crave the sanitised quotes on screens in a student centre. But they might love theatre, or art, or music. They might love to read, they might just might want to get involved in sharing their passion with others. Dreaming Larger is not about hoarding away the pennies it is about facilitating student programs and initiatives. Proposing to cancel the primary arts festival on campus was a disgrace. And it remains so. A key witness to this manoeuvring remarked that the cause for the funding withdrawal related to previous budget over-spending. This may be the case, but surely the way forward is to work with student representatives to ensure they know how to work within a set budget rather than removing it altogether.
Lilly Pads are famous plants, we inspired Claude Monet and we adorn your mugs and place-mats, but even we do not have a magical solution for money shortages in the tertiary sector. The only thing we can suggest is working with students and not against them.
[It is true that the efforts of students involved have managed to ensure a smaller level of funding from some sources but this post in not about that epic journey.]

What is Muddy Leaks?
Muddy Leaks is UNofficial, UNabashed, UNrepentant, as you might have guessed from the repeated slogan around the site we are also fond of the UN prefix.
In the land that is Melbourne, the home-town of the one and only Julian Assange we are providing a new platform for information. Our pond might be a little bit smaller, but the depths of MUDfest 2011 are no less murky than the wider politics of the world. One often takes for granted the benevolence of a pretty picture but dip your hand into the inviting looking pool and you might feel a little residue of filth. This year, the fact the MUDfest 2011 is even occurring is extra pretty because of the insidious dealings behind the scenes. Out of this dirty, sloppy, muddy sludge there comes Muddy Leaks who is tasked with sharing what is underneath the surface with those looking in.
Muddy Leaks is headed up by Lilly Pad, but is supported by a variety of Confidential Sources; Insiders; Party-goers; Close Contacts; People In The Know involved in MUDfest 2011.
AND YOU.
